Miller Family to hold 3rd Annual Bowling Green Kentucky Stand, Over $30,000 Raised in Past Two Years

Riley Miller is spearheading the efforts of the Bowling Green area to help raise funds to fight childhood cancer. Miller, 13, had two brothers, Reid born in December 2001 and Randon born in July 2006 both who passed away from childhood cancer. Riley’s newest brother would be one year old on July 19th; he passed away last September from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Miller said, “We hope to have a successful year in memory of baby Randon Miller and my other brother, Reid Miller, who passed away in 2002.”

Miller noted that several children in her area have come to know the world of cancer. The stand in her area will also be honoring Mya Henderson who just underwent a bone marrow
transplant for AML.

Please visit a lemonade stand on Saturday, July 7th.

45 Grants Awarded Nationally, Learn about the Grants in the Kentucky/Tennessee Region

We are unique in our approach to funding childhood cancer research -- we work directly with doctors, researchers, and nurses to identify the specific challenges they face in bringing new treatments to children with cancer.

For example, in 2006 Dr. James Whitlock of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, TN was awarded a Translational Award grant in the amount of $200,000 for Pediatric Oncology Translational Research Program.  This grant will help bring cutting edge treatments to very ill childhood cancer patients more efficiently.

Dr. Michael Engel, also of Vanderbilt University Medical Center was awarded a $30,000 Young Investigator Award in 2006 for research - MTG-16 Regulation by Phosphorylation.  Again, 2007 funding is contingent upon a non-competitive progress report from Dr. Engel.

The above grants are just two examples of the 45 grants that have been distributed nationally.

Grants distributed from Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation are designed to fill the critical gaps in funding as identified by doctors and researchers across the country. Careful distribution of our grants has allowed doctors and nurses to bring the latest and most promising life saving treatments to seriously ill children.
