#Journey2AMillion Spotlight

Team Natalie - Greece

September 4, 2014

Medical student Natalie Collias was drawn to last year’s Million Mile by her interests in running and pediatrics and her desire to give herself a project to focus on after a difficult year. In the middle of a period of depression and anxiety, joining the Million Mile gave her purpose and most of all, perspective on her own problems and circumstances.

As an undergrad at Case Western, Natalie had volunteered in the cancer/immunocompromised section of Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital (part of UH at Case). As a medical student, she has continued her interest in pediatrics and works in a pediatrics department. During every run, Natalie’s mind turns to the children she has encountered in the hospital. She thinks especially of the first patient she ever met while a volunteer - a strong, resilient, optimistic and hopeful 12 year old who made a strong impression on her. She realizes that although she started running for her own health, she now runs for these children!

Natalie is now entering her fourth year of studies in medical school and is ready to attack Alex’s Million Mile this year with hopes of doubling both last year's mileage and donations. Although she hasn’t been running in a while (she’s been a busy medical student with exams!), she is going to be out as often as possible this September.
