It's that time again! On Saturday, August 9th, we will be set up behind the Simmons Island Beach House fundraising for pediatric cancer research from 11AM - 6PM. Come join us for a day at the beach and have a cup of lemonade, some delicious baked goods donated by Oliver's Bakery or one of our other yummy treats that we'll be selling. When it comes to something like this, every little bit counts. So even if you come out and spend $0.50 on a cup of lemonade, you can feel good knowing that you have helped an amazing cause. Your $0.50 could help to save someone's life. We have been lucky enough to raise over $2,000 already and we're not stopping there! This year, I am cutting back from three dates to one so if you're interested in helping out, make sure to stop by! 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to benefit pediatric cancer research so dig up that change from under the couch cushions and you can help join in our fight to find a cure!
If you can't make it out and would still like to help, feel free to donate online or text “LEMONADE E1115750” to 85944 to make a $10 donation directly to my stand!
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.
Even though this charity is geared towards helping children with cancer, I was given the option to hold a stand in memory of anyone. This year's stand will be held in memory of Michelle Richter. Who is Michelle Richter? To sum that answer up in one word. Soldier. She was brave, strong, fearless, stand up, and until her very last breath, a fighter! During an exploratory surgery, Michelle was given the life changing news that she had Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. Over the next two and half years, she underwent several surgeries, procedures, and chemo treatments. Countless hours of doctor and hospital stays and visits. She endured constant ups and downs. However, Michelle, was someone's mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was shown a tremendous amount of support from those who loved her, as well as strangers who had only heard her story. Sadly, the disease won the battle and Michelle passed with her family by her side on April 18th, 2013. Unfair and tragic, a life cut short with so much more to be seen and done at the age of only 47. The love she was shown, and the strength within her is what made her fight such an incredible story. Her family and friends first hand experienced what is was like to love, help, and lose someone with this horrible disease. Their lives will never again be the same. They will never watch another cancer commercial, see a woman with a bandana covering her head, or see a cancer post on Facebook, without thinking of Michelle and her battle with cancer. Although so much pain and suffering was felt, Michelle left behind so much love, strength, and humbleness to each one blessed to have known her. We find peace in knowing her suffering as stopped, and her story will continue to touch hearts and raise cancer awareness.
