SO... we're one week into this challenge and it's just me, Jeff and the dogs :(

Where are all the people who care about kids???? I know you walk around every day. I know you go to the mail box, or walk the kids to the bus stop or even walk around the grocery store. Can you not count those steps on your smart phone (there are free apps that will do it for you) and donate even 50 cents per mile to help find a cure for childhood cancer? Your child may not be affected now or EVER but statistics say a child you are close to will be. Wouldn't you like to know when that day comes that you have done what you can to help find a way to make them better?

It's an ugly disease and you cannot be politically correct when talking about it. I learned that the hard way, watching the "cancer moms" in my friends circle suffer and go through what they do. They don't care about what's PC. They don't care if they offend. They don't care if people don't like if it's ugly and nasty. Because that's the reality. Ugly, nasty, crap. (i want to use much stronger, more vulgar language but I'll save that for my personal pages. Alex's page doesn't deserve my vitriol). Until we get ugly and nasty back and demand attention for these kids nothing will be done. Our kids deserve so much better. We need to get angry, pissed off and demand that more is done to find a cure. More funding, more research, more appropriate treatments for children. Kids are NOT just little adults... a lifetime of working as a pediatric critical care nurse has taught me that.

Please join me in this fight. I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall. I can't imagine how the "cancer kids" and their parents must feel...

Ok guys!! Today was a good news day for Julia!! In celebration let's get a big push in sign ups for the Million Mile! Tuesday is the beginning of the challenge. Sign up and link your FitBit or your Map My Fitness app to this page and your mileage tracking is automatically done for you!! How easy can that be?!?! C'mon, these kids need us. No kid (or their families) should ever have to deal with this demon or the treatments they suffer to "cure" them. Stand up and do something. I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do. I will stand beside you and fight with everything I have to bring awareness to this cause and shine a light behind the curtain where things aren't so pretty. Beyond the slick ad campaigns, and the million dollar slogans, there are kids suffering through treatments designed for adult bodies. Kids are NOT just little adults, we need to make sure the right people are given the right funding for the right research for the right medication regimens for these kids so they don't have to be subjected to all of these unknowns!! Yes, I'm angry. Please, fight along side me. Count your steps in September. Pledge 50 cents a step. Pledge 10 cents. Pledge SOMETHING. Get your kids involved, everything you do counts for these kids. They deserve it.

Here we are... a mere 2 weeks from the beginning of September, a month in which we adorn ourselves and our homes in gold ribbons in order to raise awareness about the devastation of childhood cancer. I wish there was no need for a special month, or week or day to remind people that so many of our kids are dying from this monster. To remind them that these kids are dying while undergoing treatment regimens researched and developed for use on adults. To force them to understand that IF these children "survive" the initial cancer the secondary cancers and illnesses are devastating, often caused by the very "cures" from the first round.

We have GOT to do better for our kids. No, MY own children have not been affected physically. They have, however, seen the effects on friends and the children of our friends. Unfortunately, they also have heard stories of the children we have had the bittersweet opportunity to cross paths with in the course of their treatments.

We must put our best efforts into supporting research specifically directed toward the treatment and cure of cancers that occur in children. Childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded. Less than 5% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers each year.

Alex's Lemonade Stand supports pediatric cancer research and treatment. I'd appreciate your assistance in helping me help them end this disease that steals too many of our kids!! Thanks for whatever you can do. ‪#‎TeamJulia‬

Today is August 1st. September is just around the corner.

September is officially Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Personally, I think it should be EVERY month. I have been blessed with healthy kids (and, yes, GRANDkids!) but I have seen the toll childhood cancer takes on it's victims and their families both as a healthcare professional and, unfortunately, as a friend. It's not just the diagnosis, but the treatment and long term effects that are devastating as well. The embarrassingly small amount of funding that is earmarked for pediatric cancer must be changed. Education and awareness is the way to do that.

Alex's Lemonade Stand is a wonderful foundation who supports all of the above. In support of their vision and in honor of a dear friend's daughter who continues to heroically battle this beast, I have created a team for The Million Mile event in September. As a participant, you make a donation and track your steps for the month of September. Symbolically walking alongside these miniature warriors and helping raise money for the fight. No specific time or place, just the steps you already take running errands, playing with the kids (count theirs too!!!), it's easy to help. Please click below for more information about the Milion Mile and Alex's Lemonade Stand. If you're so inclined, join me and #teamjulia in support of this organization! It's an easy way to give back, bless others and hopefully effect change.

Please join me in helping to raise funds in support of pediatric cancer research and treatment through Alex's Lemonade Stand. Too many kids suffer from this terrible illness but even worse is the suffering through the treatments designed for much larger, adult bodies. An embarrassingly small percentage of funds raised by "big name" organizations is earmarked for pediatric cancer. We owe our kids more.

I'm taking on this challenge in honor of my friend's daughter Julia. At 13, Julia is now battling this beast for the third time. After defeating leukemia TWICE she has developed a secondary cancer most likely caused by the harsh treatments from the first! It's heartbreaking to see this beautiful teenager suffer again, not only physically but emotionally as well. As a toddler she was shielded from much of the emotional pain as she couldn't understand. Unfortunately that's not the case now as a teenager.

I can't cure her. Most days I can't even find the appropriate words to comfort her or her family (is there really anything anyone can say?) I just know I've been blessed with healthy kids and I need to do something to help.

This fundraiser involves whatever activity you choose, walking, running or cycling and we will earn money per mile completed throughout the month of September. Please sign up to join me in this effort (I'll be cycling and hopefully walking). If you'd rather support my efforts by cheering me on and pledging a donation to the cause that's greatly appreciated as well. I'm setting a goal of 100 miles and $1000. If 10 people donate $1/mile I will reach my goal. I would love to give more, I'll put in my best effort if you will too. No child should have to suffer. Alex's Lemonade Stand supports pediatric cancer research and treatment. I'd appreciate your assistance in helping me help them end this disease that steals too many of our kids!! Thanks for whatever you can do. ‪#‎TeamJulia‬
