Asher Brody, was born July 5, 2013. He was blessed with a most beautiful smile and infectious laugh, and he brought pure joy to his family and friends. On August 3, 2014, Asher was diagnosed with Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia (AMKL), a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer. He spent the next three and half months at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he received intensive chemotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, Asher’s leukemia did not respond to aggressive therapy and he passed away in his family’s loving embrace on November 15, 2014. Asher was an exceptionally warm and loving little boy and, at the same time, was a fierce, brave fighter, meeting every challenge with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He is sorely missed every day.
While childhood cancers make up less than 1% of cancers diagnosed each year, childhood cancer rates have been rising for the past few decades. In 2015 alone nearly 10,400 children in the United State under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. Today cancer is the second leading cause of death in children (after accidents) and nearly 1,250 children younger than 15 years old are expected to die from Cancer in 2015. Many of those that are fortunate enough to "beat" childhood cancer continue to suffer from significant medical challenges as a result of the highly toxic treatments currently used to combat the disease.
