SPARTA — Joining the battle against childhood cancer, Sparta community volunteers and the Pope John High School theatre department are coming together to host an Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Thursday, Feb. 25; Friday, Feb. 26; and Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
The lemonade stand will be held during intermission of the Pope John Players presentation of “Les Miserables,” produced by arrangement with MTI. Members of the community were inspired to get involved in the battle against childhood cancer when two boys in the community were diagnosed with brain tumors in the past year.
Survivors of childhood cancer from the Sparta area, their families and many of their supporters are helping out in this effort. Proceeds will be split equally between Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Making Headway, a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation dedicated to the care, comfort and cure of children with brain and spinal cord tumors in New Jersey, New York, and surrounding areas.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $30 million towards fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 125 research projects nationally.
