Foundation invites those touched by childhood cancer to educational event

PHILADELPHIA, PA – In a continuing effort to unite pediatric cancer patients and families, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will host its Second Annual Childhood Cancer Symposium on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia. The event, which is free to those who attend, is designed to be an educational resource for all families affected by childhood cancer including parents, siblings and childhood cancer patients themselves.

Consisting of general and breakout meetings, this year’s symposium will bring back sessions that had the most significant impact on last year’s attendees, including Bereavement, Siblings Issues, and Survivorship. In addition, new topics will be added to the agenda including Nutritional Concerns, Late Effects of Treatment, and Clinical Trials & Experimental Treatments. The sessions are designed to give families the opportunity to equip themselves with knowledge about childhood cancer treatment and beyond, while gaining support from other families in a group setting. There will be a separate program designed for children in attendance.

In addition to funding medical research leading to better treatments and cures for childhood cancer, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is constantly looking for other ways to make a difference in the lives of families affected by the disease. Among the additional resources that the foundation provides: offering assistance to families who face the need to travel for childhood cancer treatment through a Travel Fund, treatment journals, and an online educational center where parents, teens and kids can learn about the many aspects cancer.

“As we commemorate ten years since Alex held her first lemonade stand, we are proud to continue her mission in various ways,” said Liz Scott, mother to foundation creator Alexandra “Alex” Scott. “While our focus remains on finding a cure for all childhood cancers, we are equally dedicated to supporting children and families through all stages of their cancer journey. The Symposium proved to be a wonderful resource for families last year, and we look forward to hosting it again this summer.”

Along with parents and other family members of childhood cancer fighters, the Symposium will also welcome many guest speakers. Among the speakers on the agenda are Terezie Mosby, MS of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital who will discuss nutritional concerns during and after treatment; Kerry Moss, MD of UConn Health Center who will focus on survivorship, primarily focusing on the transition to adult care and fertility options; and Rochelle Bagatell, MD of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will present the latest information pertaining to clinical trials and experimental treatments.

At the end of the evening, all attendees will be invited to a special reception with dinner and dancing.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will offer travel assistance for those families experiencing financial hardship. All attendees are invited to reside in the Loews Hotel at a special discounted rate for this event. Please contact Shirley Moy, Resources Coordinator at ALSF, for more information, 610-649-3034.

About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004).  At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer.  Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.  To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $30 million towards fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 125 research projects nationally.
