Four young Grosse Pointe Woods residents are hosting their second annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise money for childhood cancer from 2:30-5:30 p.m. today at 470 Cook, between Mack and Lakeshore.
Deemed the “Fabulous Four,” 11-year-old Lauren Miller, and her 9-year-old sister Brittney Miller, along with 10-year-old twins Lauren and Olivia Owen raised $400 last year for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.
The foundation began with 4-year-old cancer patient Alexandra Scott of Connecticut who in 2000 sold lemonade to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Alex later succumbed to cancer in 2004.
Since that time, the foundation has evolved into a national fund-raising movement with thousands of volunteers raising more than $25 million to fund more than 100 cancer research projects.
The “Fabulous Four” girls were inspired by their baby-sitter Jenna Walsh, 23, from Harrison Township who, along with the girls’ parents, will help sell lemonade.
