Philadelphia, June 11, 2010 – The “Alex Scott Phone Bank,” a 15-hour fundraiser held on CBS 3 and The CW Philly yesterday to raise funds for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, has generated $835,775 in pledges for pediatric cancer research thanks to corporate sponsors and Delaware Valley television viewers.
In addition to contributions from the public, area businesses also contributed to the fundraiser with Applebee’s/Corner Bakery leading the pack with a check for $300,000. Other corporate contributors included Volvo and Just Born Candies, the makers of PEEPS, each with contributions of $200,000. KRAFT/Country Time Lemonade and USA Beverage were also among the contributors.
The Alex Scott Phone Bank aired in special segments from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the broadcast day on both stations. CBS 3’s Chris May, Susan Barnett, Pat Ciarrocchi, Ukee Washington, Anne-Marie Green and Stephanie Stahl spearheaded the effort, joined by Alex’s parents, Liz and Jay Scott, along with other CBS 3/CW Philly on-air staff as well as personalities from the CBS Radio stations locally. Meteorologists Kathy Orr and Justin Drabick also hosted a CBS 3/CW Philly lemonade stand to collect donations in Ocean City, New Jersey.
“Once again, we have been so impressed by the generosity of our viewers,” says President and General Manager Jon Hitchcock. “Even in such difficult economic times, the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys continue to step up to help children in need.”
"As we are each and every year, we were amazed by the generosity of CBS 3 and CW Philly viewers and the residents of the Philadelphia area," says Liz Scott, Alex’s mom. "We couldn't think of a better way to kick off Lemonade Days and feel that the phone bank is a great indication of how successful the weekend will be."
In conjunction with Lemonade Days 2010 (June 11-13) when thousands of volunteers across the country will take a stand against pediatric cancer by hosting lemonade stands of their own, the stations will air Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope, a new moving half hour special that tells Alex’s story, Saturday, June 12th at 7 p.m. on CBS 3. The show will be rebroadcast on Sunday, June 13th at 11 a.m. on CBS 3 and at 10:30 p.m. on The CW Philly.
CBS 3 acknowledges the support of Local Toyota Dealers, Ashley Furniture Home Store, Good Neighbor Pharmacy, The Malvern School, P.J. Fitzpatrick, Inc. and CBS Radio in making this special fundraising effort possible. CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly 57 (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.
