Philadelphia, PA (October 2011) – Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for all kids with cancer, has just announced a new school program entitled Change Childhood Cancer. The service learning program for students of all ages is designed to show children that through small actions can come big change. Through the lesson plans and activities provided, participating students and their classmates will work to fill lemonade cups with change that will then be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and the battle against childhood cancer.
Change Childhood Cancer follows in the footsteps of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation creator Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who through her front yard lemonade stand proved that anyone is capable of making a difference. Coinciding with the new school year, Change Childhood Cancer encourages students and their classmates to read the book Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand, set a fundraising goal, come up with creative ways to earn change, track their progress, and work together to achieve their mission. Along with teaching teamwork, other skills can be incorporated into the program including basic math and English. The program’s goal is to show students that the simple act of collecting change can have a large impact in the battle against childhood cancer. Additionally, the program is designed to be fun and suitable for both large and small groups, whether it’s a class or an entire school.
“Through the years, school fundraisers have been a large part of our success,” says Liz Scott, Alex’s mom and Vice President of Outreach and Communications for the foundation. “Earlier this year one of our supporters utilized a very similar fundraising campaign in their school and the success was astonishing. We felt that asking students to come up with a simple way to collect change to make a difference fit well with Alex’s inspiring message.”
In addition to the program geared toward students of all ages, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has created a Champion Program for High School and College students. The program allows the older students to act as mentors to the younger students by visiting schools and coaching them through their fundraisers. After obtaining permission from local elementary schools, high school and college students act as ambassadors to share the program. The foundation supports the efforts of the “champions” by providing guidance, resources and any materials necessary.
