Giving Back: Monmouth Teen Hosts Childhood Cancer Fundraiser

When Maggie Gaal was 9 years old, she learned the pain she had in her left leg wasn't just growing pains — she had osteosarcoma.

But now Gaal, 17, has taken that news and the following years of hurdles to host an annual fundraiser to help combat childhood cancer. The senior at Monmouth County Regional High School hosted her eighth Alex's Lemonade Stand at her Tinton Falls home Saturday, offering lemonade and homemade cookies outside for the cause.

"It's a way I like to give back," Gaal said. "This is for childhood cancer and that's what I like to focus on — a lot of kids can't help themselves."

The Gaal family was chosen to be New Jersey's Hero Family State Representatives for the national foundation's fundraising weekend June 12 to 14.
