Hinsdale Central School fifth-graders have contributed to a multimillion-dollar mission to cure childhood cancer.

And, simply enough, they did it with lemonade.

Donating to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation — a charity that has raised more than $100 million for research since its 4-year-old cancer-stricken founder, Alex Scott, set up her first stand in 2000 — the Hinsdale students raised $526 selling cups of lemonade during two lunch periods and a chorus concert May 15, 18 and 19, said fifth-grade teacher Holly Edwards.

Alex passed away in Pennsylvania at age 8 in 2004 after battling neuroblastoma.

“The kids were excited and had a lot of fun with it. We were the only school in New York state doing it. We’re definitely going to do it next year,” said Edwards, who coordinated the effort with fellow fifth-grade teacher Kathleen Jedrosko. “The students’ goal was $100. At the end of the first day they had $200. After $200, we changed our goal. I think they jumped to $400. After that, they said we can do more than $400. It’s quite amazing.
