Kansas City Royals Star Alex Gordon Speaks at Shawnee Fundraiser

The Mid America Sports Complex buzzed with activity this weekend for the Alex Gordon Classic tournament.

Little league players from all over the Kansas City metro had raised money, more than $20,000, for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises money to fight childhood cancer. The four top fundraising teams, including the Strike Zone Sluggers, a Shawnee team of players 10 and younger, were given royal treatment Saturday as they sat in the front row for a presentation by Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon.

Players on the Strike Zone Sluggers including Sawyer Fox, 9, Tyler Alexander, 10, Preston Oliver, 10, and Jacob Jewel, 10, said Gordon is their favorite player, and they were more than excited to meet him. Darren Fox, one of the team's coaches, said that the event not only got the kids excited about baseball, but their fundraising efforts put the sport, which many have been playing since they were 4, in context.
