BRIDGEWATER —
The pictures of bald children in hospitals would bring a tear to anyone’s eye.
But for 11-year-old Justin Rich of Bridgewater, those images spur him to action.
Since he was 4, Justin and his aunt, Tammy Dzialo, both of Bridgewater, have held Alex’s Lemonade Stands to raise money to fight pediatric cancer. This year Justin is running the show by himself.
He will once again be sitting in front of Roche Brothers supermarket on Washington Street in Easton on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon offering cups of lemonade to those who pass by and asking for a donation in return.
“Sometimes it can be hard, but it turns into something good,” Justin said. “The hard work is worth it.”
His effort is the latest in a series of lemonade stands held across the region this summer as kids looked to help others through sales of the cool, sweet beverage.
In July, there was Claire Noonan, 11, Kaleigh McCormack, 12, and Maddie Marchand, 11, who ran a lemonade stand in Brockton, not to get some pocket money, but to donate to good causes. The girls chose autism and breast cancer as the targets of their fundraising efforts.
In June, there was Stephanie Povilaitis, 9, of Stoughton, who was out selling lemonade in her neighborhood to raise money for tornado victims in Springfield.
Also in June, Tate Balcarek, a two-time cancer survivor at age 8, held a lemonade stand and bake sale during her family’s annual yard sale in Easton to benefit the Jimmy Fund of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Now, Justin Rich is continuing his own lemonade stand tradition.
This year, he has two 4-year-old helpers, Andre Cantave, 4, of Bridgewater and Mackenzie McManus, 4, of Rockland.
On Tuesday night, the kids gathered in Bridgewater to decorate signs, label donation containers and snack on an occasional lemon cupcake as they got ready for the event.
