Lemonade stands are a great way to make some extra pocket money for some kids.
Peoria resident P.J. Bartos had similar plans until his mother, Donna, chanced upon a jar of lemonade several years ago at a Walgreens. The label mentioned that proceeds would benefit research to fight childhood cancer.
Donna told her son about the special lemonade stands set up across the country each year for that cause. P.J. was hooked, and this week marked the fourth year he has set up a lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research.
Eight-year-old P.J. and about 75 youth volunteers on Monday handed out freshly squeezed lemonade for donations at north Peoria's Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia. A fundraiser party was also held at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill. Between both efforts, P.J.'s stands raised $7,300.
"7,304 dollars and 33 cents," P.J. repeated proudly.
