Pro Women’s Team Proud to Honor Alexandra Scott and Alex’s Lemonade Stand With Jersey Sleeve Patch

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 15, 2010)
- The Philadelphia Independence is proud to announce its partnership with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (ALSF).  ALSF emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott, Philadelphian and young hero who raised millions of dollars to help find a cure for childhood cancer.  From 2000 until her death in 2004 at the age of 8, Alex held annual lemonade stands to raise money for cancer research.  Her idea to make lemonade out of lemons caught on as ALSF has raised more than $30 million across the country from neighborhood and community lemonade stands.

From donning the ALSF logo on the Independence player jersey sleeve to making appearances at the foundation’s signature events, the ALSF-Independence partnership will focus on raising awareness in the community for childhood cancer, which affects over 12,000 children in the United States each year.  Independence players and staff will also have a visible presence during ALSF’s upcoming lemonade season, making appearances at marquee foundation events including the CBS3 Telethon, Alex’s “Original” Lemonade Stand, and volunteer-run lemonade stands throughout national Lemonade Days (June 11-13).  Players will also utilize ALSF’s children’s book Alex & The Amazing Lemonade Stand as part of an Independence school reading program when visiting area schools.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with the Independence,” says Liz Scott, mom of foundation creator Alex Scott. “It is apparent that the women on this team are strong and dedicated, and the same can be said for my daughter, Alex.  We are sure that these women will help us to bring attention to the cause of childhood cancer in Philadelphia and beyond.”

The Independence is the first team in WPS to display a non-profit organization on the jersey sleeve, a space typically reserved for team sponsors. “The Independence is honored to wear Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation on its jersey sleeve” says Independence Owner David Halstead. “Our organization is committed to serving our communities and helping inspire generations of youth through our actions on and off the field.  We believe in and promote the strong characteristics that Alexandra Scott, in her short wonderful life, represented.  While fighting a hard battle against cancer, overcoming insurmountable odds against her, Alex remained dedicated to collecting and donating money to fight childhood sickness in others.  That’s uncommon bravery, courage, and perseverance.  We are proud to be part of Alex’s message and her cause to cure childhood cancer.”

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will also accept the “Women’s Award of Excellence” at the June 13 home game, which falls during National Lemonade Days. Foundation creator Alexandra “Alex” Scott’s family will be on hand to accept the award and perform the ceremonial coin toss.
