UNC Women’s Soccer Team to Play Notre Dame Thursday in “Yellow Game” for Childhood Cancer Awareness

In an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Women’s Soccer team will play Notre Dame this Thursday at 7 p.m. on Fetzer Field in the “Yellow Game” – a match to raise awareness and research funds for the disease.

The game will honor 7 year-old Chapel Hill resident and cancer patient, Alex Ferm. Alex loves playing soccer and says he is one of the UNC women’s soccer team’s biggest fans. In July 2013 at the age of five, Alex was diagnosed with t-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoblastic lymphoma. He has been in chemotherapy at the University of North Carolina ever since but his treatment is scheduled to end November 10, 2015.

While in treatment, Alex befriended UNC soccer player Kelly MacFarlane as the team made visits to the clinic and during her volunteer hours on weekends. Through Kelly, Alex became an even bigger UNC fan. Kelly has since graduated but her sister Darcy now plays on the team and is supporting the cause. The team will be wearing yellow tape on their wrists to represent childhood cancer awareness. Alex will be attending the pre-game party, be presented with a team jersey and will be honorary game announcing, presenting the starting line-up pre-game.

Donations for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will be collected at the game. Fans are encouraged to wear yellow to support the Foundation.

The match will also air live on ESPN3.
