Rocking Fundraiser Raising Cash to Fight Cancer

Kari McCarthy of Oak Park knows it strikes most people as odd when she says her family feels lucky.

Her 5-year-old daughter, Aria, has acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Diagnosed two years ago, Aria is on track to complete chemotherapy in May, a few days before her sixth birthday.

Despite what Aria has dealt with, the family feels fortunate. While there's a cure for the cancer Aria has, "there's a lot of kids that don't have that," McCarthy pointed out.

That's why the McCarthys are hosting Aria Rocks the Lemonade Stand on March 15 at Wire in Berwyn, which will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. The nonprofit organization that started with a young girl with cancer collecting money to fund childhood cancer research has raised more than $100 million in the past decade.
