Castro Valley family joins nationwide effort to raise funds for childhood cancer research
While most of their Independent Elementary School classmates were still snoozing or enjoying their Sunday morning, William, Amy and Charlotte Baggott were working to help fight childhood cancer.
"It's mostly about helping people not get sick," William Baggott said.
That is, people like Alexandra "Alex" Scott. Just before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of pediatric cancer. At age 4, Alex decided she wanted to raise money for childhood cancer research and set up her first lemonade stand.
People from around the country heard of the lemonade stand and began sending money. Alex continued setting up lemonade stands annually and the Alex's Lemonade Stand Organization was born with lemonade being sold in Alex's name across the country.
In August 2004, Alex lost her battle with cancer at age 8, but not before raisng over $1 million for the cause that was so dear to her heart.
This year's Alex's Lemonade Stand is the Baggott family's second. Last year the family held a stand at their home in Santa Clara before moving to Castro Valley.
