It only takes a brief conversation with Riley Gillespie to figure out the Middletown teenager has a quick wit, a strong sense of determination and a huge capacity for kindness. Those attributes were to be honored this weekend at the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s Lemon Ball at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, where Gillespie was to receive the Stand Host of the Year award.
Twelve years ago, Gillespie’s friend, Jeremey Garcia, was diagnosed with acute lymphlastic leukemia. To celebrate his last chemotherapy treatment, the two friends set up a neighborhood lemonade stand to raise money for children’s cancer research.
In five hours, they had raised $3,200, says Gillespie.
