A speech-language pathologist at Southwest Elementary School who was inspired by Alex Scott and her parents wanted to help fight childhood cancer during Lemonade Days. But this year, fighting childhood cancer took on a local feel after a 4th grade student shared her survivor story.

In June 2010, Melia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at 4 years old. Melia received chemotherapy for 2 years and 2 months. But finally, Melia got better and in April of 2017, she went to her last cancer check up! She is cancer free! Melia is excited about selling lemonade to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation!

What makes our stand so special is that our students are learning about community, communication and character as they sell lemonade. The school has hosted a lemonade stand for the past six years during Lemonade Days. The students in the special education classes host the stand and work on their communication skills as they sell lemonade, brownie brittle and t-shirts. They also have a silent auction supported generously by local businesses. Students were so happy to share that in 2017 they raised $7,011.89 to support pediatric cancer research.

“I love seeing my students’ smile and laugh and hearing about all the good things that happen at the stand,” said Maria.

Maria’s Tip

This year, we created a social media page to let others know about our community event. We also remember Alex’s story and that no gift is too small or too large!
