On Sunday, November 16, I will lace up my running shoes for the 2014 Avengers Superheroes Half Marathon in Disneyland; I will be running in support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an organization that raises money to support research on pediatric cancers in Canada and the US.

Alex’s Lemonade stand was founded by Alex Scott, an inspiring young girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma just before her first birthday. She fought valiantly against the disease for several years before passing away at the age of 8. Prior to her passing, Alex raised money for childhood cancer research by setting up lemonade stands in her front yard. Today, her legacy lives on: Alex’s Lemonade Stand has raised more than $75 million in support of pediatric cancer research and has provided invaluable support to children and families who have been affected by a childhood cancer diagnosis.

It seems fitting somehow that I stumbled upon this event, the 'Avengers Superheroes' half marathon, when I was looking for a half marathon to participate in this year. While I do think of myself as an Avenger in the fight against cancer, it is the children who are battling cancer, their families and friends who are the real Super Heroes.
