A cure for childhood Cancer. Is this Tribute Fundraiser associated with an event? Yes, this fundraiser is associated with an extremely difficult trail run event... Yet there will only be 1 participant in the actual run itself... He will be running the Tahoe Rim Trail (165 miles!) in honor of our son, his nephew, to to bring awareness to and FIGHT Childhood Cancer... Let's Find a CURE!! Together, we can do it!! A Few Details of Shane's Diagnosis: Every week, I come across more devastating Cancer diagnoses of children on line and even in my own town...!! This is NOT ok. I can still hear those words... almost as if in slow motion. The doctor was teary-eyed... he said, "We are very concerned about your son... it looks like Cancer...possibly Leukemia" But, I had to hold it together, because my 7 year old son was staring at me... studying my face, through the E.R. room window, for signs of fear, concern... It was just he and I in the E.R. at the moment. My husband was at home watching our then 3 year old daughter. I literally had to plaster a smile on my face and give him a wink... at least until I was out of his eye sight. My hands began to shake almost uncontrollably. I could actually feel the blood drain from my face and then my whole body tingle and a sudden feeling of extreme, disgusted, nausea... At that moment, I wasn't sure if I'd ever smile again. In fact, I couldn't even imagine ever feeling happy again... This fundraiser is SO VERY important to this WORLD!! The very survival of our children relies on Childhood Cancer Fundraising. Please help us to reach our goal of $300,000!! The following is a note from my brother (Shane's Uncle), to all of you... My name is David Husted. I am a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, and most importantly, a father. I also happen to run – primarily outdoors and on steep trails. Two years ago, our family received devastating news. Our nephew, Shane, was diagnosed with Leukemia. For our family it was a shock, but for my sister, Kristen, Sean, Reese, and Shane it was devastating and life changing. We have all tried to help as much as possible, but living nearly two hours away, there is not a lot we can do on a day-to-day basis. So when my sister asked me if I’d be interested in running as a fundraiser for childhood leukemia, I immediately said, “Yes”. I have done many organized races in the past – completing marathons, ultra marathons, and even a 100 miler in the Colorado mountains. I have also planned my own long runs – going solo with just a backpack of necessities and a trail plan in my head. It has always been a goal of mine to run the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 165 mile trail located in the mountains that I love. I have run portions of this trail in the past, but I have never run the entire 165 miles. Kristen and I agreed this would be the perfect challenge to raise awareness and funds for Childhood Cancer. In early July, I will attempt to run the entire Tahoe Rim Trail in three days, with some assistance for food and water along the way, but without pacers. It will be hard, and quite possibly the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. However, I take on this challenge knowing it’s for an amazing cause. It is our hope that no other families will have to experience what Kristen, Sean, Shane and Reese have had to endure for the past two years – with yet another year and half to go.
