Since my son, Josh, was diagnosed with cancer just over two years ago, I've learned a lot about pediatric oncology. For instance, I've learned that in the U.S. each year, at least 10,000 children under age 15 are diagnosed with cancer and of those 10,000, roughly 1,500 children will die from it, making childhood cancer the leading cause of death by disease for children in the country. I've also learned that of all the money raised for cancer research, only 5% of it goes toward childhood cancer research. Because of the lack of research, the only treatment available for these children is the same treatment that adults receive...which is rather harsh and intense chemo. In learning all of this, I wanted to get involved; do something to help. And now that Josh is in remission and done with treatment, I can. During Josh's two years of treatment, we have met many amazing families that have stayed strong despite their child's struggle; these families became our family. Sadly, of those families, Josh and I have lost roughly 16 friends to childhood cancer. It's in the memory of every one of those children taken too soon and in honor of their families that survive that I am holding this stand, with the hopes that together we might make a difference in another child's life. Help me help our children. Thank you.
