We Reached

$500

September is over but childhood cancer is still here. For our final miles of the month, Natalie and I logged a few on the bike, the three of us (and friends) hiked an old mine at almost 4,000 feet, and we enjoyed running and walking in our neighborhood together. We are happy to have met and exceeded our mileage goal and we are almost there in our fundraising efforts!

We will never forget Libby and the battle her family fought for her to beat this ugly thing called cancer, and now as they struggle to go every day without their precious girl. We are forever changed as a family. While I may not be logging miles and showcasing our adventures on Facebook, I will be soaking up every moment with my girls. Every shoe I tie, every snotty nose I wipe, every ponytail or braid I make, every tickle session, every spilled cup of milk, every 100 lb stroller I push or wiggly bike I drive, I will honor Libby and the struggle her parents make as they miss these tiny but significant moments.

This week we did not meet our goal of 15 miles as the weather really prevented us from taking our long bike ride together. Instead, we explored our beautiful neighborhood and the surrounding Eagle River valley. We collected leaves and rocks, splashed in puddles, saw a rainbow, hiked along a river, ran through waist high grass (over the kids' heads!), and logged 8 memorable miles together.

I found out that Natalie is an explorer. She's the baby, so she's always in the backpack carrier or stroller, and she is typically content. But when let "loose" today, she demonstrated her very curious mind. This, along with money for this organization, is what I wanted to get out of my challenge.

Thanks again for being here with me.

The end of this week marks the halfway point in our challenge! We've reached 25 of 50 miles and $250 of our goal of $500 raised! Unfortunately we got hit with a flu bug and Natalie and I couldn't do our mommy/daughter challenge. We did go on an awesome hike over the last weekend (picture attached). With the help of some friends the girls and I made it up 900 feet, which included a set of 300+ steps to the top, and that was only the second half of the mountain. We had a blast!

I am so thankful for everyone who has donated, and we will get back on track with our miles this weekend! Thanks for your encouragement and support!

Today was my first full day alone with Natalie since….hmm, maybe when she was first born and Nana and Grandpa took Sophie? So I have decided that for the month of September, Natalie and I will take an adventure every Thursday that Sophie is in school. Today we rode bikes along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. It was about 40 degrees, and the trail hugs the Cook Inlet on the west side of Anchorage. I was freezing, but Natalie was a trooper! I think she must have known that we were logging these miles for our awesome cause, and she told herself that these kiddos with cancer have to endure so much more than just a little cold weather. We only went about 5 miles, but ended our adventure with a sense of accomplishment.

To my friends and family who have already donate, THANK YOU! You know how much this tragedy has impacted my life. I hope I can reach my goal and let Barb and her family know that their support group just keeps growing!

xoxo

First 11 miles down. Family bike ride to the "Butte" and back in Palmer AK. With Pioneer Peak in the background and Matanuska River alongside us, we traveled through tunnels, on bridges, next to lush forests, swamps, and gorgeous mountains!

5 more miles on the bike with friends. We froze, but it was fun! And although it may not look like much of an adventure, we were in MOOSE COUNTRY! We did't see one but I was definitely keeping my eyes peeled :)

We started this pledge off right, with a hefty 11 mile bike ride along the Matanuska River. Doesn't sound like much to some cycling enthusiasts, but when you're towing a 2 and 3 year old, and you're a novice cyclist, this was a huge accomplishment and confidence boost! A great way to start this month of adventure in Libby's honor!!! The girls had a great time, we stopped for an ice cream at the halfway point, sang and cheered the entire way (for fun, and to notify the bears of our arrival!). We traveled 5.5 miles from downtown Palmer, AK to the "Butte," a cute little hill compared to the vast mountains surrounding it. Before turning around, we had some ice cream at a cute gas station in what seemed like the middle of nowhere! We hope to climb the Butte and log those miles too!! Thanks for following along!
