I’m helping Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation raise funds to find a cure for all childhood cancers – you can too! Please support my efforts!
I first became aware of childhood cancer when a young lady I know was diagnosed with a GBM (Glioblastoma multiforme) tumor in April 2011. Katie is a young lady that I first met on the softball field. My daughter plays fastpitch softball and so does Katie. They also played together in high school. It was Katie's sophomore year. We were right in the middle of our softball season. Katie missed a game because she had been ill with severe headaches and dizziness. Her mom took her to the emergency room and an MRI revealed the tumor. She was immediately sent to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago. On April 26, 2011, the doctors did a craniotomy to remove the tumor from the right side of her brain. She then underwent 6 weeks of radiation and 24 rounds of chemotherapy. Today Katie has just begun her sophomore year of college on a softball scholarship. Her scans show no new cancer.
When I first found out about Katie's cancer, I wanted to do anything I could to help out the family. I organized a tshirt sale to help raise funds for the family. I was part of a group of friends that organized a huge spaghetti fundraiser. It was so important to help in anyway possible. Helping them has gotten me interested in helping more. I've done some reading and research about childhood cancer research and I'm astounded at the lack of funding for children's cancers. 3% is minuscule when the death toll is so high.
So that's why I'm here. I hope to raise awareness and along the way funding for important research. Please help in any way you can. My miles are dedicated to Katie and the 46 kids diagnosed today and tomorrow and the day after that. Thank you and #GoGold
