The Fews and the Freitags go together like peanut butter and jelly. We and our children all shared a close bond right from the start and we quickly became as close as family. Despite moving to another state, we continued to make every effort to get our children together with family weekend getaways. When we learned that Abigail was diagnosed with cancer, words cannot describe the our devastation, but we quickly turned all of our fears to hope. We prayed unceasingly for strength and healing for Abigail and her family. We hung onto every update with renewed hope for treatments and healing. Abigail was such a strong fighter throughout this difficult journey without complaint. She spend countless nights in the hospital with her family by her side and an army of prayer warriors supporting them along the way. In early December, the updates changed from hope and healing to needing a miracle. It was difficult to be so far away from this family we love so much; we felt helpless. We used our love, support and prayers as our only true ammunition.
Our hearts were broken and our lives ever changed in April 2015 when we received the news that sweet Abigail earned her angel wings in heaven. We held tight to the scripture and cried on the broad shoulders of the the Lord. But Jesus called the children to him and said "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these". (Luke 18:16). After a long year of strong hope and faith and now missing our beautiful friend Abigail, I feel compelled to help other families who are faced with this devastating diagnosis. Although I felt like I was helpless in helping Abigail in her personal fight, I feel a renewed sense of purpose to help those who are faced with the same challenge.
Every year, an estimated 263,000 new cases of cancer affect children under the age of 20 worldwide. That's 720 new kids affected every day. And yet, childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded. Less than 5% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers each year.
Please help us reach our goal of $2000 which will fund one week of childhood cancer research. If we meet or exceed this goal, I have pledge to donate my hair and will cut my hair in a pixie cut!
