Taylor’s story is one that I hope will empower you with love, strength, and resilience as we venture on this Million Mile journey together. Taylor was adopted by my aunt and uncle from South Korea as an infant, and immediately filled a space in our hearts we never knew needed to be filled. Her smile and laughter were contagious! And the pure way she loved was like no other. It was as if she knew she only had a short time on this earth and made sure to make the most of it, leaving a last mark on the lives of everyone she encountered. At the young age of 6 years old, Taylor received the diagnosis of Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that occurs in bones or in the soft tissue around the bone. This diagnosis would ultimately take her life in a mere two months in 2006. To this day her light refuses to fade even with her passing. If anything, it has just grown stronger. The following year Team Taylor was established in her honor, and we continue to strive to spread her message across the country. The message is simple, make a difference. As her cousin, I personally have a goal to run a half marathon in every state wearing my team penny. What means the most to me is when a spectator along the race route shouts her name, not mine. I’m merely a vessel in this journey, working to bring awareness to the cause and the desperate need for a cure, so that we can save the lives of other children like Taylor. Every child deserves to see the day they enter remission. That’s why I run and will continue to run until that goal is achieved.
