Part 5- finding out chemo didn't work was a bummer, we still had hope that he would go through it and we would walk away with this as a distant memory. This is where I really started to understand that cancer Is not usually like we see it on TV or social media, it often times does not leave quickly and usually has additional complications. Radiation began at the end of June, about 5 months into the journey but it felt like many life times. We were fortunate to have a proton therapy center that had opened in the metroplex within the last year, otherwise we would have had to travel to Houston for the 30 treatments (6 weeks, no treatment on weekends). The benefit of the proton therapy is that it is more focused, so it has less impact on areas located near the cancer, very important for the brain and spine. Treatments are done in sections and Owen required 4 sections ( 1 to the brain, 3 to the spine) and lasted about 45 minutes each where he would remain totally still with a fiberglass mask pressed on his face. There were a few challenges, one was that the tumor or surgery or something related was causing Owen to gain weight, he would get weighed once a week and he got up to 325lbs, the maximum weight allowed on the 150 million dollar machine was 328lbs and there was nothing we could do to control the weight, it was not a eating related weight gain. Another challenge was hair loss, the Dr said to Owen "you see me? you see your dad? you will have less hair than both of us in a week." that's how Owen found out he would lose his hair.... we weren't at Children's anymore......
