When
Alexandra "Alex" Scott, a young cancer patient, was only 4 years old when she decided to hold a lemonade stand to raise money for "her hospital," so doctors could help other kids like they'd helped her. Alex held her first stand in 2000 and continued to hold lemonade stands each year, inspiring support from her community and across the nation. Although sadly Alex passed away at the age of 8, she knew she had reached the ambitious goal of raising $1 million for childhood cancer research.
Sullivan "Sully" Shields was also diagnosed with cancer at the age of 4. He is now 9 years old and has been battling Stage IV Neuroblastoma for 4 and a half years. He has endured 28 rounds of chemo, 5 surgeries, 3 rounds of experimental internal radiation treatment, two months of external radiation treatment, a stem cell transplant that kept him in the hospital for the entire month of December, 5 rounds of immunotherapy, and 8 rounds of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy. Twice in the past four years he reached remission only to relapse both times and need to start treatment anew. Happily, with the help of clinical trials funded in part by Alex's Lemonade Stand, Sully is cancer free again, hopefully for good. If Sully can handle all he has had to, surely we can run, bike, and swim some miles in September to raise awareness and money for a cure!
