Alex Scott started a national movement to cure childhood cancer from the simple idea of holding a lemonade stand and wanting to make a difference. Alex lived each and every day with the hope for a cure, inspiring a foundation not only funding pediatric cancer research, but also one teaching important lessons of giving and empowerment. Shortly before her first birthday, Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a serious and fatal type of childhood cancer. The doctors informed Alex's parents that if she beat her cancer it was doubtful that she would ever walk again. But, Alex beat the odds and proved that she was a determined, courageous, confident and inspiring child with big dreams and big accomplishments. By her second birthday, Alex was crawling and able to stand up with leg braces. At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. While bravely battling her own cancer, Alex continued to hold yearly lemonade stands in her front yard to benefit childhood cancer research. In 2004, Alex passed away at the age of 8, knowing that, with the help of others, she had raised over $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. I am inspired by Alex's courage and determination to fight, despite the battle she faced with her own fatal illness.
