Just as the excitement of senior year of high school was beginning for many of us, on September 27, 2019 our friend and Class of 2020 classmate, Pierce Slutzky, lost his fierce battle with medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer. Throughout his battle, Pierce dedicated himself to doing well in school. I've learned from his family that despite sixteen weeks of proton radiation, two years of chemotherapy, two stell stem transplants, one trial, two brain surgeries and other surgeries for port and Omaya placements, two years of home school, over sixty nights in the hosptial, and taking his last regents hooked up on morphine at the hosptial, Pierce maintained a 4.1 GPA and excelled on his regents exams. This offers incredible perspective and inspiration.
Pierce's determination was unwavering, and he just wanted to graduate and go to college; tragically, it was a dream Pierce did not get to realize. As many friends and neighbors know, there is now a scholarship in his name for dedicated, college-bound students. The funds raised from ticket sales from the February 27th Schreiber Slam V will go to both Pierce's memorial scholarship and towards essential brain cancer research. In addition, through this ALSF site, you are able to make a donation in Pierce's memory directly specified towards funding research towards a cure for medulloblastoma which claimed his life.
Thank you for supporting Schreiber Slam V and for honoring Pierce's wish to never be forgotten. My memory of talking about this event in class with Pierce in middle school when our older siblings at Schreiber were raving about "the Slam" motivated me to bring back Wrestle for a Cause and make it even more unforgettable and meaningful by connecting it to Pierce. He will be remembered always.
Be awesome,
Zoe
Every day, there are almost 700 new cases of childhood cancer around the world. This adds up to an estimated 250,000 new cases of cancer affect children under the age of 20 each year worldwide. And yet, childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded with less than 4% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancers each year.
ALSF founder, Alex Scott, started Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation with one front yard lemonade stand. Today, ALSF has raised over $150 million and has funded nearly 1,000 research grants at institutions around the U.S. and Canada. It all started with one cup of lemonade. You can carry on Alex’s inspiring legacy by raising money to fight childhood cancer. Please make a donation of any amount to help more kids like Alex fight cancer.
Today, the money you donate has the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of kids with cancer (and their families). Your donation will go to research into better and safer treatments and more cures. Please don’t make these kids wait longer than they have to and give today!
