I'm holding a fundraiser to help Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation move one step closer to finding a cure for all children with cancer!
This fundraiser is in honor of my brother, Jabie Rafael Escano. As many of you know, my brother was born with a rare form of eye cancer called retinoblastoma. Just months old, his right eye was surgically removed to prevent the spread of his cancer. After receiving treatment, he was in remission for many years. Though he had a right prosthetic eye, his vision in life was never affected. He never let his "disability" prevent him from doing things he was passionate about. Despite our fears and concerns, he played soccer, took karate lessons, wrestled, and even went to driving school. To be honest, he lied to my parents about joining the wrestling team. He knew how scared my parents were but did it anyway. Don't worry, we actually laugh about it now. For weeks my parents couldn't understand why he was in school so late and why he was tired. You really couldn't tell him no. He wasn't a disobedient child, he was a child who wanted a normal life with the same opportunities the other kids had. In fact, he was an honor roll student and rarely got in trouble.
Unfortunately, during his senior year of high school, his cancer returned. He fought so hard and NEVER lost hope. With the help of his oncology doctors, social worker, childlife specialist, and nurses, he made it to prom and graduation. Despite the odds, he was able to experience college life before his cancer spread to his brain. My brother passed away in December 27, 2009. Though he is no longer physically with us, he is always remembered and missed.
You can join me by helping me plan, attending my event or making a donation right to this page. The money you donate will pay for research to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer, specifically retinoblastoma.
