On April 11, 2007 our daughter, Bridget was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. In Bridget’s case, the mass originated in her spinal cord and progressed into her spinal canal as well as attaching itself to her abdomen. Since her diagnosis, Bridget has endured several failed chemotherapy cycles and 2 major surgeries - also many other tests and procedures that no child should have to go thru, but unfortunately, must. Bridget continues with her recovery and has progressed tremendously since her original diagnosis. She is not totally out of the woods, but we remain hopeful she will make a 100% recovery in the coming months. Bridget has endured more in the last eighteen months than many adults, let alone children, will ever experience in their lifetime. From this we take the good. It’s difficult not to when we see the recovery she is making and how she has gone about it. Her ordeal has brought our family, immediate and extended, closer in ways unimaginable before this all began. Today, we see a smiling little girl eager to find all of life’s simple pleasures…pleasures as seen thru the eyes of a child. Whether it be a pail and shovel on the beach or ride on mom’s bike to the chocolate shop, she shows the enthusiasm only found in a child. The word “lucky” may seem an odd one to use when describing a child with cancer, but that is how we feel. We’re lucky to have such a brave child, lucky to have such a tough sister for her brothers and sisters to look up to, lucky to have her as an inspiration to so many, lucky to have found the right place for her to be treated and, ultimately, lucky to have her with us knowing that others are not so fortunate. We sit here today with a lovely young girl - with the brightest blue eyes you have ever seen – full of life who can’t wait for her next Alex’s Lemonade Stand. However unfortunate, Bridget shares a common neuroblastoma thread with Alex. By the same token, Bridget also shares Alex’s vision of curing childhood cancer…one cup at a time. Indeed, we call her “HERO” in the truest sense of the word. Go Bridget!
