A Leavenworth fourth-grader is helping to raise funds for children's cancer research.

Asking for donations at Applebee's restaurant in Leavenworth, Tyonna Jones, 9, raised $209 in two hours last weekend to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand, a national nonprofit organization that raises funds for cancer research.
"I had fun but my feet did hurt," Jones said.

Troy Carpenter, Jones' grandfather and an employee at Applebee's who is leading the fundraising effort, said the experience offered a lesson to be learned by his granddaughter.
"It taught her a lesson about paying it forward," Carpenter said.

Jones and Carpenter are two of many local volunteers who are chipping in to raise money for the foundation that was inspired by a young cancer victim.

Alexandra "Alex" Scott was born in 1996 in Manchester, Connecticut. Before she reached her first birthday, she was diagnosed with cancer.

According to the foundation's website, Alexandra Scott told her mother that she wanted to have a lemonade stand to help raise money for doctors to "help other kids, like they helped me."
