Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

As you may know, September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Help commemorate the month and raise awareness for childhood cancer by doing a few things throughout the month to show your support! Here are some ideas:

  1. Register to hold your own lemonade stand in September, find a stand to visit or volunteer at a local childhood cancer organization.
  2. Visit a Caring Bridge page and leave a note for a childhood cancer fighter.
  3. Read our book Alex and The Amazing Lemonade Stand at a school or library.
  4. Read a Hero Story from our website, or view the videos on our YouTube page, and then share them with friends and family.
  5. Buy a virtual cup of lemonade for $1 from Volvo, or donate $1 a day to childhood cancer research for the month of September.
  6. Share a bag of Mike & Ike Lemonade Blends and Alex’s story with a friend or two.
  7. Check out the Childhood Cancer Petition.  Make sure to sign and encourage your friends to sign as well.
  8. Put gold balloons on your mailbox, or wear a gold ribbon pin in honor of children fighting childhood cancer.
  9. Wear your ALSF gear for the day!  If you don’t have any, check out our Gift Shop.
  10. Utilize facebook – join our fan page, cause, post a picture or donate your status to childhood cancer for the day!
  11. Write a letter to the local, state, and federal politicians telling them why there is a need for funding.
  12. Join Team Lemon!  Dream Big, Live Bigger.
  13. Visit our September Regional Events in Cleveland, Baltimore & L.A.
  14. Follow us on twitter - @AlexsLemonade.
  15. Organize a Jeans Day where you work and donate to ALSF as your charity of choice.

  • One in every 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of twenty.
  • On the average, 36 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer everyday in the United States.
  • On the average, one in every four elementary schools has a child with cancer. The average high school has two students who are current or former cancer patients.
  • Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States.
  • Childhood cancers affect more potential patient-years of life than any other cancer except breast and lung cancer.
  • The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown. At present, childhood cancer cannot be prevented.
  • Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region. In the United States, the incidence of cancer among adolescents and young adults is increasing at a greater rate than any other age group, except those over 65 years.
  • Despite these facts, childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded.
