Doctors found a cancerous tumor on Shepard’s liver shortly after his second birthday. For a year and a half, Shepard’s parents (my brother and sister in law) fought for every opportunity to save Shepard’s life. His fight consisted of many one step forward one step back scenarios. What doctors originally believed to be an easily treatable case ended up being an extremely rare, fast growing, and aggressive form of cancer. Shepard went through several rounds of chemotherapy, two rounds of radiation, and six surgeries. Each time, our family believed this time, this procedure, would surely be the answer to our prayers. Shepard past away suddenly on April 11th, 2026. He was 3 and half years old.

While Shepard’s life was cut short, the love he gave and received in his life was not. Shepard lit up every room he entered. He was a very smart and mature little boy. Shepard loved dinosaurs, paw patrol, Mickey Mouse, and playing in the pool in the summer! While Shepard spent almost half his life sick, his joy never faded. He never knew he was sick. He was resiliently strong.

While Shepard’s family did not personally benefit from Alex Lemonade Stand, other organizations helped ensure they were able to get Shepard the best care. Shepard was transferred to Boston Children’s Hospital, and his family was required to pick up a second living situation for almost a year in Boston, flights back and forth, and the cost of treatment. Every parent will go to any distance to try and save their child’s life, but this still comes at a cost. Organizations help counter some of that.

Please remember Shepard this season and remember why we need to keep fighting for a cure. Shepard should have been able to go to Kindergarten, meet his new sibling this summer, and just get to grow up.

Forever missed and forever my little mighty pup!
