When
On October 20, 2022, our world was flipped upside down when Elsie, who was two at the time, was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma. She had about a 50% chance of surviving 5 years past diagnosis. We were devastated.
Cancer was something that happened to other people's kids. Never in a million years would I have thought that MY child would be given such a diagnosis.
For 16 months, Elsie fought for her life. She underwent 5 cycles of chemotherapy, a tumor resection surgery, 2 rounds of high dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue, 12 rounds of radiation, and 6 cycles of immunotherapy.
Thankfully, Elsie's body responded well to treatment, and in March 2024, she rang the bell to celebrate being cancer free at the end of treatment.
Unfortunately for so many kids, the happy ending never comes. Out of every 5 kids diagnosed with cancer, only 4 survive... and in the USA, about 47 are diagnosed every single day.
Funding for pediatric cancer research is sorely lacking. Only 4% of government funds for cancer research go toward childhood cancers. Over a span of 40 years, when over 200 drugs were developed and approved for adult cancers, only 6 were developed for childhood cancers.
While many adult cancers have screenings to help with early detection, there are none for pediatric cancers. Meaning that by the time they're diagnosed, they have often metastesized, making the prognosis much worse.
Childhood cancers are not the same as adult cancers. By using drugs that were developed for adults, children are often left with a lifetime of health problems caused by the treatments used to save their lives.
We need more research to find safer, more effective treatments so kid have a chance to just be kids.
That's why we're raising money for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
$50 funds a full hour of research.
Our goal is to fund a week's worth of research, but we can't do it without you. Every single dollar helps.
You can come to our lemonade stand to donate in person, or you can make a donation directly from this page.
If you can't donate, help raise awareness by sharing Elsie's story.
Childhood cancer is ugly. It's easy to want to look away, but we can't change what we won't confront. Don't ignore it anymore.
