When
Our lives changed forever on January 22nd 2021 with a phone call. Words cannot convey the heartbreak, pain, sheer terror and helplessness we felt upon confirmation that our beautiful, seemingly healthy, 4-yr boy (Remy) had been diagnosed with high-risk stage 4 neuroblastoma. It's that moment that all parents worry about many times in a year - but yet so rare in occurrence - that you push it out of your mind. "I'm over-reacting", "don't be silly" etc. And yet 2.5 years ago, we became members of an exclusive (and yet unwanted) club of childhood cancer families.
Remy completed 16 months of treatment that included nearly 100 days in hospital where he was given one targeted therapy and nearly a dozen non-targeted, incredibly toxic chemotherapies. While we are incredibly grateful that Remy is now in remission (!!), it is never far from our thoughts that Remy's future is unknown (HR-neuroblastoma has high relapse rates / "surviving the cure" has long term impact on health ) and many children and families are not as fortunate with initial treatment.
There is little that we, parents and caregivers of children with cancer, can control in the moment as we do battle alongside our brave little superheroes. One thing we can do though – is to try and do better for the future.
Every day, there are almost 800 new cases of childhood cancer around the world. This adds up to an estimated 300,000 new cases of cancer that affect children under the age of 20 each year worldwide. And yet, childhood cancer is vastly and consistently underfunded with less than 4% of the federal government's total funding for cancer research dedicated to childhood cancers each year. In addition, there is a need to prioritize more targeted, acccessible, effective and humane therapies for pediatric cancer.
Today, the money you donate has the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of kids with cancer (and their families). Your donation will support families navigating a child's cancer diagnosis and care, as well as fund research into safer, more effective treatments and (hopefully!) cures.
Please consider donating and let’s fight harder to achieve a world where every child can be given a cure!
Thank you for your support!
