United StatesHi, my name is Malcolm Cills and I am 14 years old. When I was 3 years old, I was diagnosed with Wilms' Tumor. This is a cancer that only kids get and it starts in the kidneys. I had my left kidney removed then and I had radiation and chemotherapy. My cancer came back next in my liver and there had been a spot in my lung that went away the first time. I had most of my liver removed and I had more radiation and a lot more chemotherapy. This time it was worse and I was really sick all of the time. I had tubes that came out of my chest and we had to pin them to the inside of my shirt. I also got shots at home in my legs and arms. I was always in the hospital because I had a fever, I could not drink anything or I was too sick to be around other people because I could catch something. I had more surgeries and the last one they took samples of my other organs and they all looked good. This was a good thing because I was so sick from my chemotherapy, I was not able to get anymore. I go back to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia once a year for scans, x-rays of my chest, blood work and other tests. This takes all day, but I do not mind.
I have to be careful that I stay healthy and I can't play contact sports even for fun. I have to be careful with my one kidney. I also have to keep my lungs healthy because they were radiated.
I have big scars on my stomach from my surgeries and when kids ask me what happened, I say that I was attacked by a shark. They love this.
I am thankful to be healthy and to live a good life. I play baseball and I love to play the drums. I have a lot of friends and I love my school.
I wanted to do something for kids with cancer and Alex's Lemonade Stand is the perfect way to do this.
I am having a stand on June 5th in my hometown of Moorestown, NJ. I hope you come by and have some lemonade or just donate money for this cause.
Thank you, Malcolm
