Welcome to Charlottesville vs Pediatric Brain Tumors!
Every year in the U.S., over 5,000 children and adolescents (ages 0 - 19) will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor. Whether benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous), these tumors can leave lasting physical, cognitive, social, and emotional consequences on the children they affect.
Why Your Support Matters
Brain tumors are the most commonly diagnosed solid cancer in children (0-14 years old) and the leading cause of childhood cancer-related death. On average, 14 U.S. families hear the words "your child has a brain tumor" every single day.
There are over 100 distinct pediatric brain-tumor subtypes, each requiring focused research to improve outcomes.
Primary malignant childhood tumors carry a five-year relative survival rate of 75.6%, meaning that 1 in 4 children do not survive beyond 5 years after their diagnosis.
The Funding Gap
Despite these daunting statistics, pediatric cancer research receives less than 4 % of the National Cancer Institute's cancer research funding, leaving scientists and clinicians struggling for resources as they race to develop better, more targeted therapies.
