When Nicholas was 2 years old, everything changed very quickly. Not even two weeks after his birthday, he became suddenly and very seriously ill—so weak that he could barely stay awake. We rushed him to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, where he was taken in right away by an incredible team of doctors and nurses.

From the beginning, Nick’s journey was overwhelming. He needed a port placed and had frequent blood draws, and there were many moments where he had to be held still through painful procedures that no child should ever have to go through. He also had to undergo spinal taps where chemotherapy was given directly into his spine, which was one of the hardest parts of his treatment for him and for us to watch.

He went on to endure three bone marrow aspirations, each one incredibly difficult. His first port later shifted and caused complications, which meant he needed another surgery to have a new one placed. That surgery was performed by pediatric surgeon Dr. Richard J. Scriven, who handled both of Nick’s port placements with great care.

During those moments, Dr. Nicole Muhlbauer was someone who made a lasting difference for us. She made us feel seen, respected, and never brushed aside. In a time that felt chaotic and frightening, her presence brought a sense of steadiness and care that meant more than words can fully explain.

Even through everything, Nick started showing a quiet kind of bravery that came in small but powerful ways. He would look at me and try to comfort me, telling me not to be upset and that he was okay. He trusted the people taking care of him, and that trust helped carry him through more than we ever thought possible.

Throughout everything, Nick was surrounded by nurses who became like family. RN, MSN, CPNP Renee Moos, along with Lauren, Tara and Debbie, were some of the people who showed him the most consistent love, patience, and kindness through every visit and every hard day. They became familiar, comforting faces in a world that often felt overwhelming.

This is something Nick will always carry with him—not just the medical side of it, but the importance of staying strong, staying on top of his health, and continuing to grow into a healthy, balanced life.

One moment from clinic has always stayed with me. An older young man came in for a routine visit—he was about 21 years old. One of the longtime nurses, Ms. Patty, shared that she remembered him when he was just a baby Nick’s size. Now he was healthy and grown, and you could see how proud he was to be back there, seeing the people who had cared for him all those years ago. Moments like that stay with you, because they remind you that even after something as painful as childhood cancer, there can still be full lives, healing, and futures that keep moving forward.

Nick’s story carries a lot of pain no child should ever have to go through—but also so much love, resilience, and a community of people who truly carried us through it.

We are deeply grateful to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and to every doctor, nurse, and staff member mentioned—and so many others who played a role in Nick’s care—for their compassion, dedication, and unwavering support throughout this journey. We will never forget the care, kindness, and humanity they showed our family.

Alexandra “Alex” Scott

January 18, 1996 – August 1, 2004

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old Alex Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement and is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada. In loving memory of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, we remember a little girl whose courage was far greater than her years. While battling cancer herself, Alex chose to spend her time helping other children facing the same fight. What began as a simple lemonade stand in her front yard became a movement that has touched countless lives and funded lifesaving childhood cancer research. More than two decades later, Alex’s dream continues to live on through every cup poured, every dollar raised, and every family given hope. Her determination showed the world that one child can make an extraordinary difference, and her legacy reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can create lasting change. We honor Alex by continuing the mission she started—to fight for better treatments, more research, and ultimately cures for all children with cancer. As we gather together, we remember not only the remarkable little girl who inspired millions, but also the thousands of children and families who continue to face childhood cancer every day. May Alex’s story inspire us to keep giving, keep hoping, and keep fighting until no child has to hear the words, “You have cancer.” Her light continues to shine in every lemonade stand, every act of generosity, and every step forward in the fight against childhood cancer.

Fight Childhood Cancer,

One Cup at a Time.

After one whole year of fun, friendship, and making memories together, I would love for everyone we’ve spent time with to come together and give back to the children who need it most.

This year is especially meaningful. We will be hosting an official Alex’s Lemonade Stand event to raise money for childhood cancer research, specifically Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) — the same cancer that Nicholas bravely fought and defeated against all odds.

Today, nearly 90% of children diagnosed with ALL survive thanks to advances in research and treatment, but that still means too many families hear the words no parent should ever have to hear. Every year, children continue to lose their lives to this disease, and every breakthrough that saves a child begins with research. (Cancer.gov)

Nicholas is living proof that hope, determination, amazing doctors, and groundbreaking research can change a life. We are forever grateful for that gift, and now we want to help give that same hope to other families facing the fight of their lives.

We hope you’ll join us, but if you can’t make it, please know that every single dollar makes a difference. No donation is too small, and every penny goes directly toward funding childhood cancer research and helping bring us closer to a future where every child has the chance to grow up healthy and cancer-free.

Together, we can turn one child’s victory into hope for many more. 🍋💛
