We're hosting our third annual lemonade stand to support childhood cancer research. 

This cause became deeply personal to us after Clayton was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer affecting just one in a million children. Today, he is free of the disease, and we owe that to the families, researchers, and advocates who came before us.

Why it matters

Every day, 800 children around the world are diagnosed with cancer. That’s nearly 300,000 kids each year.

Yet childhood cancer research is critically underfunded. Less than 4% of federal cancer research funding is dedicated to childhood cancer. And only a fraction of that goes to rare cancers like hepatoblastoma.

This means treatment options can be tough and come with long-term side effects. We saw that firsthand. Clayton’s treatment included chemotherapy originally developed for adults in the 1970s. Even though the nausea, painful throat sores, and the exhaustion are behind him, he will always be monitored for any long-term side effects.

Our kids deserve treatments designed for them. Ones that are safer, more targeted, and carry less risk for long-term impact. 

Clayton’s story

It began when Clayton was just three. What initially seemed like a simple stomach bug soon led to weeks of persistent fevers, trips to the emergecny room, countless tests, and no clear answers. 

Something just wasn’t right. We found a pediatrician willing to dig deeper, and she uncovered the masses. She intrustructed us to go the ER for further testing and we received the diagnosis no family is prepared for: hepatoblastoma.

The next eight months were filled with countless scans, blood draws, procedures, rounds of chemotherapy, and a life-saving liver transplant.

Today, he builds Legos. He plays baseball. He loves dragons. He will soon enter 1st grade. His curiosity and imagination are endless. He's a kid again.
