SHARE to raise awareness for children with brain tumors for #BrainTumorAwareness Month!
Brain and spinal cord tumors, collectively known as central nervous system tumors, are the most common solid tumors in children—and the most common cause of cancer deaths in children, too. Here are the facts:
- Over 4,800 children are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year in the United States (this includes malignant and low-grade tumors)
- Over 500 children die each year from a brain tumor
- Treatments can be devastating, leading to significant long-term side effects that impair mobility and impact performance in school
- Research is consistently underfunded, but Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is working to fill the gap and has funded more than 300 brain tumor research grants, helping change the future for children with brain tumors

Brain tumors are the deadliest type of childhood cancer.
Did you know that a decade ago, brain tumors became the leading cause of childhood cancer death while survival rates for the most common forms of leukemia improved to nearly 90%? Treatment options for childhood brain tumors have advanced, but survival rates remain below 10% for some fast-growing high-grade tumors.
This is why research is so important. If progress is possible in leukemia, it is possible in brain tumors. And you can help.

Pediatric brain tumor research remains underfunded.
As is true for all types of childhood cancer, pediatric brain tumors receive significantly less federal and industry research funding than adult cancers.
For example, there are only 19 late-phase clinical trials open in the U.S. for kids with brain tumors—roughly half the number available for adults.
You can help change that.

ALSF has funded over 300 pediatric brain tumor projects.
Over the past 20 years, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF)’s investment in pediatric brain tumor research has led to meaningful progress and incredible survival stories. Like Brynn, who was treated by ALSF-funded researcher Dr. Ted Johnson. Today, she is thriving after a clinical trial saved her life.
ALSF has funded more than 300 brain tumor projects since 2000, spanning multiple tumor types and treatment approaches, all aimed at improving outcomes and finding cures for more children.

Every day, a child in the U.S. will die of a brain tumor.
In 2023, 523 children in the United States died from a malignant brain tumor—more than one child every day.
According to The Childhood Cancer Report 2026, if current trends continue, more than 5,000 children will be lost over a decade.
Investing in research can change this trajectory and improve survival for more children.

The average age of diagnosis for a pediatric brain tumor is 8 years old.
At 8 years old, children should be enjoying the third grade—not stuck in the oncology clinic.
For adults, the average age of diagnosis with a brain tumor is 62 years old. For children with brain tumors, treatment often comes during critical stages of development and can impact motor skills, cognition, and long-term quality of life.
