Despite great advances in the care of kids with cancer, it is still the leading cause of death by disease after infancy among children in the United States. In addition, 60% of cancer survivors suffer long-term side effects from their treatment. The main limit of traditional cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy is that they not only kill cancer cells, they also affect healthy ones. A new mode of treatment called Cancer Immunotherapy unleashes the patient’s immune system to only target cancer cells while avoiding healthy ones.

In the United States, children fighting cancer rarely ever abandon care. Most will complete their cancer treatment. Many more children who get cancer in the United States survive. However, in poorer countries like Botswana and Malawi in Africa, many children with cancer do not finish treatment and die. In some countries in Africa, nearly half of children with cancer end up abandoning care. This is one of the reasons why most children with cancer in Africa die.

Background

Current studies are taking place to collect and sequence DNA and RNA in blood and tumor samples obtained from children both newly diagnosed with, and relapsed brain tumors. Samples from approximately 100 cases have been collected.

Background

The frequency of cardiac imaging in cancer survivors is a current focus of controversy because over screening adds burden to the healthcare system and patient, but under screening may miss potentially treatable complications. An additional challenge is the technology for measuring cardiac function is changing.
