Jackson County’s Annual Freedom Ride Returns Saturday, July 1

In a continuing effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer, members of the United We Ride cycling team in Kansas City will host the 9th annual Freedom Ride benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. On Saturday, July 1, the cycling event will start at the Government Employees Health Administration building parking lot at 7:30 am, with registration beginning at 6:30 am. Cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to tackle the trail and road routes, ranging from 35 to 75 miles. New this year, families have the option to ride the Little Blue Trace Trail.

Members of United We Ride created the Freedom Ride to raise funds for cancer research, treatment and family support services. The team, originally formed for Bike MS, has broadened its reach to unite local communities in a common fight against childhood cancer and promote bicycling safety, transportation, fitness and fun.

The Freedom Ride begins in Independence, Missouri and takes cyclists through country roads in Eastern Jackson County, including Independence, Sibley, Buckner, Wellington and Lexington. The route is mostly flat. Specialty rest stops along the route—such as Sibley Orchards, which will be selling pies after the ride— have been designated to enhance the riders’ experience. In addition to the ride, there will be a raffle for gift cards from local vendors.

Registration for adults prior to the event is $30, while day of registration will increase to $35. Registration for children ages 8-16 is $5 and children 7 and under are free. Along with packet pick up the day of the event, packets are available from 4-6pm on Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 19677 E Jackson Dr., Independence, MO.
