Georgina is 20 years old and is currently studying nursing at UTEP (University of El Paso). She enjoys making jewelry and spending time with family and friends, and hopes to someday become a pediatric oncologist. This ambition came from being diagnosed with stage 4 acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August 2006, when she was 12 years old.
 
When she found out she had cancer, Georgina was told her kidneys weren’t working and she would have to have dialysis in addition to the cancer treatment. She had to have many surgeries and a full hip replacement, as well as chemotherapy and radiation. She also had a bone marrow transplant which resulted in graft-versus-host disease, a complication in which the transplanted cells attack the body.
 
Georgina has been through so much that at times, she says, “I feel I want to give up but my family and friends help me keep on fighting.”
