
Sam Aparicio, PhD
Dr. Samuel Aparicio (BM, BCh, PhD, FRCPath, FRSC) is a physician-scientist working with fellow Crazy 8 researchers in understanding and inhibiting mechanisms of metastatic spread in osteosarcoma. Dr. Aparicio is the Nan & Lorraine Robertson Chair in Breast Cancer Research, holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Molecular Oncology, and is the recipient of the 2014 Aubrey J Tingle Prize. He is also Head of the Department of Molecular Oncology at BC Cancer Research, part of the Provincial Health Services Authority, and a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC. Dr. Aparicio’s research program encompasses the fields of cancer genomics, mouse genetic models, high throughput screens, small molecule chemical probes, and translational breast cancer research. His research has been widely published in scientific and clinical journals such as Nature, Science, Cell and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Cells are the unit of evolution. Every time a cell divides, there is potential for a mistake to be created in the copying of its DNA, and that is what drives evolution. We have been able to catch that in the act of happening triple-negative breast cancer, a genetically unstable and highly complex cancer. With the support of the Crazy 8 initiative, we are now working on applying those methods to the study of pediatric osteosarcoma.
