Ruben Dries, PhD, brings his unique expertise in generating and analyzing spatial transcriptomics data to his Crazy 8 team, whose aim is to create genetic wiring diagrams that they can then re-wire to help therapies targeting metastatic osteosarcoma. Dr. Dries is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University and his research has been published in scientific journals such as BMC’s Genome Biology and Nature. Dr. Dries stumbled into childhood cancer research when he started his postdoc in the lab of Dr. Rani George, the lead of his Crazy 8 research group today.
“Once you start doing childhood cancer research and you read all their brave — and sometimes sad — stories, and meet the heroic patients themselves, it's very hard to do anything else again," said Dr. Dries.
I find hope in working together as a team and seeing how my skills are being amplified through synergies with expertise from my collaborators. To me, this connects with the African proverb that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go by yourself, but if you want to go far, go together’. If we really want to end childhood cancer we will have to do it as a team.
