National Cancer Survivors Month

Social Media Resources

In June, we celebrate childhood cancer survivorship, create awareness for cancer survivors’ ongoing journey, and continue to raise more funds so all children get their cures.

Below you can find resources including sample captions and images to share your involvement and help spread awareness on your social media. Please feel free to customize the captions to reflect your personal commitment to helping find cures and supporting survivors after they navigate the future after cancer.

Surviving childhood cancer is just the beginning of the journey. Childhood cancer survivors face side effects from treatment that can emerge at any time, even when the world might believe their cancer journey is over. Research is focused on finding safer, less toxic treatments, understanding the impact of cancer on kids as they grow, and providing specialized health care services to survivors.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation offers its Childhood Cancer Guide for Survivors as an essential resource for families and survivors, which is coming soon.

At least 60% of childhood cancer survivors develop one or more chronic health conditions.*

Mainstays of cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and transplant) can be curative, but come at a cost. Chemotherapy can damage hearts and hearing. Radiation can impact neurocognitive development. Surgery can weaken bones. Transplant can devastate growth. Newer treatments offer hope for less side effects and more cures.

Survival is tracked from the date of diagnosis through cancer registrars in each state, who then compare survival rates of children with cancer to those without cancer. This gives researchers a realistic sense of the prognosis for a disease that is not skewed by unrelated causes of deaths. It also helps track if treatments are really working, which is a critical data point in the fight for cures for all children with cancer.

Geography can determine childhood cancer survival.

90% of the world’s population resides in a low- and middle-income country. In these countries that often lack robust public health infrastructure, the survival rate for a child with cancer is grim: only 20-30%.

Geography can make the difference between life and death for kids with cancer.
